BC Provincial Outreach Programs

British Columbia's Ministry of Education funds a number of unique programs to help meet the educational needs of low-incidence students in BC school districts. The following Provincial Outreach Programs (POPs) provide community-based services for low incidence students in partnership with BC public school districts and Group l and ll independent schools.

Provincial Integration Support Program

Students served:
Students with severe/profound cognitive and multiple physical disabilities
Mission:
To assist school teams throughout BC in developing modified inclusive curriculums for k-12 students with severe/profound cognitive and multiple physical disabilities
Type of services:
Onsite student consultations; training through inservices and university courses; online website strategies and resources; case manager distance support; individualized student curriculum binders; modeling trans-disciplinary work within classrooms; team building and resolution; short term equipment loan bank

Provincial Outreach Program for
Autism & Related Disorders

Students in mandate:
Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. ASD includes: Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Rett's Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS/Atypical Autism)
Program mission or key goal:
To provide consultation, training, and support services to all public and independent schools across the province of British Columbia. Our primary focus is to increase the capacity of school district staff to support students with ASD.
Type of services provided:
  1. Consultation Services - individual student and team consultation, Extended 3 day consultation
  2. Capacity Building Services - workshops, courses - ASD Introductory course, ABA, 3 and 4 credit university level ASD course, mentoring and modeling on site, applied research, video conferences, website and eLearning modules

BC Provincial Outreach Program for Students with Deafblindness (Deafblind Outreach or POPDB)

Bc Provincial Outreach Program for Students with Deafblindness
Students served:
The POPDB is mandated to support school districts enrolling students with deafblindness during their school years. A request for service must come from district personnel.
Mission:
We believe every person who is deafblind should have access to trained intervenors. The consultants at the Deafblind Outreach Program work with school districts and school based teams to ensure that the unique needs of the student with deafblindness are being met, and that each student is receiving an appropriate educational program.

  • In-district ongoing consultation services
  • Inservice and training in deafblindness

Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired (PRCVI)

Students in mandate:
Students with visual impairments/blindness and deafblindness.
Program mission or key goal:
To support school districts in meeting the core and expanded core curriculum learning needs of students with visual impairments and blindness.
Type of service provided:
Ministry recommended textbooks and other learning resources in alternate format (e-text, braille, large print), consultation support, training activities and professional development.

Provincial Resource Program - Auditory Outreach

Students served:
Kindergarten to grade 12 students experiencing auditory difficulties. Students must be registered with a Public School or a Group 1 or Group 2 Independent School.
Mission:
Every school-age child experiencing auditory difficulties will have access to coordinated and equitable services to ensure a unified effort that optimizes the child's listening and communication potential.
Type of services:
Consultation to school staff and to parents in the areas of audiology, speech-language pathology and education. Assistance with assessments and assistance with the establishment of goals for individualized programs. The Auditory Outreach also loans assistive listening devices for individual students identified as needing this technology for school use. Specific services have been developed to assist children who have or are being considered for a cochlear implant.

Provincial Outreach Program for
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Students served:
Students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
Mission:
To increase teachers' capacity to meet the educational needs of students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
Type of services:
Access to resources via the website, online eLearning modules, training, workshops, liaison, consultation, research, facilitation and sharing of information.

Special Education Technology -
British Columbia (SET-BC)

Students served:
Students with autism spectrum disorders, deafblindness, dependent handicaps, moderate to profound intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, visual impairments
Mission:
To enhance student opportunities for success by providing access to the curriculum through the use of assistive technologies
Type of services:
consultation for school-based teams, assistive technology loan, technical support, training for educators and students, resources for classroom implementation of technology
